I’ve been working on this painting to the right for a little bit, layering and layering acrylic paint on paper. I really liked the texture it created but I didn’t feel it was working on the whole, so I pulled it off the wall and explored different presentation methods that made it more sculptural.
Eventually I cut the paper down, cropping into the sections. I found the most interesting. those “crops” I then wrapped around panel and presented on shelf and in a walnut frame.
When the painting is wrapped around a panel the all over texture makes it feel more like an object than a painting, a quality I am very drawn to.

A large print (42×36”) of the front and back of a tax assessment document for my grandparents home in Detroit from 1966.
Presented alongside the print is the original document mounted on panel with a walnut veneer.
I’m drawn to this object because it’s a completely objective view of the Detroit home my mother and her siblings grew up in. As a child I heard so many stories from my mother and her family about “Vaughn”, so the place in my mind is full of life, but viewed by the city tax accessor it’s nothing more than a taxable dwelling.
